How To Make The Workplace Safe And Accident-Free

Every one of us has the right to work in a setting that is safe and healthy. Despite this, it remains a distressing fact that every year, countless work-related injuries and illnesses have resulted to the demise of thousands of employees. The workplace has turned into one of the most dangerous of places.

It is due to this disturbing scenario that governments all over the world have passed laws and regulations to avert work-related accidents and diseases in companies and organizations. They have strongly imposed these rulings in the workplace. Employers therefore are not only ethically responsible, but are legally required to provide a safe working atmosphere to their staff. Workplace health and safety is a legal obligation.

Let us list down some of the safety responsibilities of employers. They should:

  • provide their employees with a workplace that does not have serious hazards and abide with all safety and health standards.

  • do away with or cut down hazards and when needful, should take the necessary adjustments in working conditions to guarantee safety. Most often employers commit deliberate negligence when they refuse to remove hazards and rely instead in masks, gloves, protective shields and glasses, and other protective gears. What should have been done was to provide enclosures or enclosing processes to trap harmful fumes, to switch to safer chemicals, to provide appropriate aeration, etc.

  • keep accurate records of work-related sicknesses and injuries. There should be a convenient reference that will provide important health information whenever workers get sick or injured.

  • post safety posters and what-to-do’s in cases of mishaps and health emergencies in the workplace where these can be readily seen and referred from by employees. Employees must know how to keep themselves safe first of all.

  • provide auditory and visual check-ups or other medical assessments to ensure that their employees are fit to work and are able to perform their jobs satisfactorily without putting their health in danger.

  • inform workers about safety hazards through instruction, labels, alarms, color-coded systems, chemical informtion posters and other methods.

  • supply first aid equipment, facilities and specially-trained people to respond to illness or injury. Approved equipments are best provided by health-accredited stores and skilled personnel can be easily found in staff solutions services.

Workplace safety is not something that management should be lax about. The degree by which employers are willing to give for the health and protection of their employees is one of the preeminent factors to staff satisfaction because it reflects significantly their commitment and concern for their employees.
